This e-book is as a complete guide on electric boating, compiled in just 6 pages. It’s made by the prestigious boating magazine Motorboat & Yachting in cooperation with the world leading electric boat company RAND Boats.
In this free guide you will get broad information about electric boats with a brief history, top 10 tips, and in-depth information about the major subjects like electric boat motor, range, charging, boat types, inboard, outboard, and other advantages like silent motor, sustainability, low maintenance and fume free sailing.
The guide also covers the development and future of electric boats, that will be highlighted in an interview with RAND Boats CEO and founder, Carl Kai Rand.
The speed is very depending on motor size and boat type. Smaller electric boats can sail around 10 knots and bigger models will average 20 knots. While this is average, it is also possible to reach over 50 knots with leading manufacturers like RAND Boats.
The range varies depending on battery size, hull constructions, and the speed when sailing. Some electric boats can sail above 200 nm in cruising speed and 30-50 nm in planning speed.
The short answer is yes, there are many electric boat types and because of the fume free sailing, they are perfect for lakes and city harbors
The size of battery is chosen in the purchase of your boat. RAND Boats as an example have one of the biggest batteries on the market going up to 234 kwh, equal to 3 Tesla’s.
It takes around 3-10 hours to charge fully, depending on battery size and chargers. It is recommended to charge the battery overnight, to have the boat ready for a full day sailing the day after. Also, you can now get fast charging for electric boats, so you can have full charge within a few hours.
Yes you can, and since it’s outboard you will be able to replace it with the gasoline engine on your existing boat. But even though you can convert your gasoline boat to electric, it’s still recommended to buy a boat made for electric since their performance will be superior to traditional boats because of a hull designed for electric propulsion with lightwieght construction.
An electric boat has many advantages over gasoline, like a lot lower running cost, low maintenance, silent motor, no fume smells, and no harm to the environment. With new technologies on batteries and motors, they can cover the most boaters needs in range and speed with intelligent systems never seen on traditional boats. So, it definitely makes sense to go electric.
This is depending on your needs. Do you want to cruiser the harbor or do watersports in the ocean? Electric engines can do both, so we recommend 6-12 kW for social cruising and at least 200-300 kW for fast speed and watersports.
As the leading electric boat manufacture, RAND Boats have created the first electric engine with stern drive, giving their models the same and even better handling than gasoline boats because of immediate thrust. If you combine that with the 460 kW motor on RAND Escape 30 you will have the best electric motor on the market with a top-speed on 50+ knots.
Electric boat propulsion has many advantages but mainly it’s low running cost, low maintenance, silent engine, no fume smell, intelligent boating, and no harm to the environment while sailing.
The electric boat range is determined by several factors, including the size of the battery, hull construction, and the speed at which the boat is sailing. The most advanced electric boats, like RAND’s models, can sail above 200 nautical miles in cruising speed, and 30-50 nautical miles in planning speed. Everything has a limit, but this range is more than most boaters sail in a day. So, by charging your boat overnight, you should have no problem with the range on your leisure day.
With advances in battery technology and hull construction, it is likely that electric boats will continue to increase in range and efficiency, making them an increasingly attractive option for boaters looking for an environmentally friendly, fume free and silent way to enjoy the water.
Electric boat companies are becoming more popular as the technology is advancing and are already close to be equal and in some ways even better than traditional combustion boats. With electric boats you get fume free and quiet sailing with almost non-existing maintenance, while doing no harm to the environment.Between several electric boat manufactures in the world, RAND Boats is in the clear forefront with their own advanced technology on lightweight hull constructions and electric boat motors, which are the world’s first with sterndrive. RAND offers not only the fastest electric leisure boats on the market, but also the longest range, that’s all raped up in a luxury Scandinavian design.
